Women of the Far North: seen in sculpture and prints

  • Inuit Women

  • Inuit women from the 1950's and 1960's were raised in a traditional way. They lived "on the land" in outpost camps and traveled on dog sleds. The women's role was to fish, prepare the food, raise the children, and make the clothes. Her job was to support the hunter. Today women live in small communities in wooden houses brought up on ships during the Summer, and they travel on snow mobiles and off roaders. They enjoy television, computers and preprepared foods. The role of the women in the north has evolved from their aboriginal origins. They now have new opportunities for independence. They go to school and many have excelled as artists working in stone sculpture and limited edition prints. All of this lifestyle depicted in the art. This page will be updated with new artwork during the next few weeks. Not yet finished....
