Manasiah Akpaliapik
The Years from 1997 to 2003
Manasie Akpaliapik, born 50 years ago, is a world class sculptor who happens to be an Inuk. Yet there is no doubt
that he is truly an Inuk. His work explores the symbols and legends of the Inuit. Through his artwork, Akpaliapik
keeps the spirit of his people alive.
His works have been collected by museums, they have been included in many books including Sculpture of the Eskimo
and The Inuit Imagination and his work has been featured in solo exhibitions by several museums.
Among his many honors, the coat of arms of the Canadian Museum of Civilization features one of Akpaliapik's carvings.
He was nominated by a St. Louis, MO museum, along with honored sculptors from around the world, for an international
sculpture award.
The Canadian Broadcasting Company produced and aired an award winning documentary about the life and work of Manasiah
Akpaliapik.
He is especially known for his superb handling of materials.
